In a rather dramatic example of wasted potential, this digital picture frame from Smartparts (SP72) offers a score of eye catching features that sound like a fantastic deal. However, in reality, the complaints about this product stack up quickly, turning it into a product that makes a great first impression but ultimately carries a big risk of falling flat.

Some of the features that make the Smartparts SP72 so tempting are:

The classically designed 7-inch screen with an impressive 480×234 resolution for crisp, clear photos

A real wood frame and beige matting that fits in with almost any decor

Included software Optipix Pro that can sharpen, edit, and compress your photos to allow even more storage space

An automatic slideshow feature that set up your viewing without any fuss and bother on your part

Two viewing modes for more variety

A low, competitive price that beats a lot of its competition

With all these great pluses, it’s no wonder that at first glance, this product seems like an amazing deal. However, a closer look at the company’s history and the details of the product merit further consideration. While the simple design holds up in quality, the resolution seems a bit low, even at this comparatively low price point.

The lack of control over your slideshows is great for the techno-dunce who just wants to turn it on and have pictures. Those of us who like bit more customization are left in the cold. What’s even worse is that Smartparts is not known for their customer service – in fact, the Better Business Bureau lists the company as being out of business.

If you want a low tech digital frame and don’t mind gambling on the product, the Smartparts SP72 is a nice clean fit. If you want just that little bit more, I’d look elsewhere.
